Who runs this site

running-races.com is operated by Paul Stavish, an individual operating running-races.com. For anything in this policy — including a request to see or delete your data — write to [email protected]. Under GDPR terms, the operator is the data controller for this site.

What stays in your browser

These are stored locally on your device. They are not sent to us, and we cannot read them:

• Your cookie choice — whether you accepted or declined advertising cookies, so the banner doesn't ask again on every visit.
• Your compare list — the races you've added to the side-by-side compare tool.
• Your last known location — if you use a “near me” feature, your coordinates and the resolved town are cached for 30 minutes so the site doesn't re-ask on every page, along with a note that you opted into location at all.

Clearing your browser's site data removes all three.

Location

The site never reads your location until you ask it to. Nothing touches geolocation on page load, and we never trigger an unsolicited permission prompt. Only once you've used a “near me” feature here will later visits resolve your location automatically — and only if your browser is still granting permission.

When location is used, your coordinates go to our own server, which matches them against a local US and Canada postal-code dataset to get a town and postal code — so the site can show you a readable reference point instead of raw numbers. Your coordinates are not sent to any third party, and we don't store or log them.

To stop this, use the “Forget my location” link in the site footer — it appears once you've used a location feature, and clears both your cached position and the record that you opted in. To also revoke the underlying browser permission, use your browser's site settings; that part is outside our control.

Advertising and analytics cookies

This site is supported by advertising. Google AdSense and Google Tag Manager can set cookies used for analytics and for personalised or non-personalised advertising, and Google may act as an independent controller of that data.

Nothing loads until you accept. The site sends Google Consent Mode v2 signals defaulting to denied, and the ad and tag scripts are not loaded at all until you choose “accept” on the consent banner. If you decline, or simply never answer, no advertising cookies are set. You can change your mind at any time using the “Cookie preferences” link in the site footer, which reopens the banner.

Reporting an error or requesting removal

Every race page has a “report an error” link and, for organizers, a “request this listing be removed” link. Both open your own email client with our address pre-filled — nothing is sent to us or stored anywhere until you choose to send that email yourself.

Server logs and error reports

Our hosting provider records standard technical request logs — IP address, timestamp, page requested, browser user agent — as an automatic part of serving the site. These are used for security and debugging, are not combined with anything else in this policy, and age out on the provider's normal retention schedule.

When something breaks, a report is sent to Sentry, an error-monitoring service, so we find out about it. Those reports contain the technical detail needed to fix the fault — the error, where in the code it happened, the page it happened on, and your browser type. They are deliberately configured not to attach identifying details, and we don't record what you do on the page. Our lawful basis under GDPR is legitimate interest in keeping the site working.

Who your data goes to

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising beyond the advertising cookies described above, which are entirely under your control via the consent banner. The third parties involved in running this site are:

• Google (AdSense, Tag Manager) — advertising and analytics, only after you accept.
• Supabase — database hosting for race data.
• Sentry — error monitoring, so we hear about breakage. Only when something goes wrong.
• Our hosting provider — serves the site and keeps the technical logs described above.

These providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States. Where required, such transfers rely on the providers' own safeguards, such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

Affiliate links

running-races.com earns a commission on some outbound registration links — currently RunSignup, and any platform we add an affiliate agreement with later. The commission is paid by the registration platform out of its own fee. It costs you nothing extra, and it plays no part in which races we list, how we rank or sort them, or what we say about them. Most races we list, including those on Haku, Race Roster, and organizers' in-house systems, earn us nothing at all.

Clicking a registration link takes you to another company's site, which has its own privacy policy and its own cookies. This policy stops at our edge. Our Terms cover this in more detail.

Your rights

If you're in the EU or UK, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, and the right to complain to your local data protection authority. Where processing rests on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

If you're a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how it's used, the right to delete it, the right to correct it, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA/CPRA.

In practice, because this site has no accounts and no forms that store data, we hold no personal data tied to you by default. If you've emailed us, write to [email protected] and we'll act on any of the above. We aim to respond within 30 days.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has emailed us with their personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, we'll update the date at the top of the page. Governing law for this policy is the law of New York, United States.
